Remembering the tide pod epidemic

Image
It’s hard to believe roughly five years ago, several people nationwide reportedly went to the hospital or died from partaking in the “tide pod challenge”. For those of you who don’t know the tide pod challenge was allegedly a challenge where a person has to consume a tide laundry detergent pod without getting sick. You would assume that people would be rational enough to know the immediate consequences of eating a inedible, chemical-filled object but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. After all, curious kids and sometimes adults with a death wish still exist. In 2018 alone there were over 8,000 cases of people ingesting tide pods and this was all because the videos of people intentionally poisoning themselves were going viral on youtube. It also doesn’t help that people have pointed out the bright colors on these appliances resembled the look of candy. It quickly became an on-running joke among internet meme culture because of how absurd the challenge sounds. Sadly this meant more p

Ableism in schools

This article is going to take a more serious tone, because this story hits a little too close to home for me personally as someone with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However, this is an example of what several neurodivergent and disabled students have endured and it’s important to spread awareness about it. Around the year 2017, in Rockdale county, Georgia, an awards ceremony was held in memorial middle school where two teachers believed it was a grand idea to give an ADHD student an award titled “most likely to not pay attention” award. May I remind you that this “award” was announced in front of all the child’s peers, further humiliating the child for something she was born with. Along with this, the student’s mother had a history of receiving calls about her daughter’s inattentive habits, demanding the mom to teach her how to pay attention. Understandably, parents were furious with this disgusting behavior from the school and complained about this to the school. Luckily

Pastor vs. Cult Leader: A Story About the Jonesboro Church War

Image
Joe Jeffers     When people hear about Jonesboro, Arkansas some know it because of an event called the Jonesboro church wars. This story’s information is mainly sourced through an interview I had with Melinda Emerson, who knew former members of Joe Jeffers’ church. It all started in the 1930s when evangelist Joe Jeffers, came and preached the gospel in a Bible College where Jonesboro High School now sits. Ten thousand people would gather because he would publicly reveal people’s sins to lead them to salvation. First Baptist Church was impressed with Jeffers, and gave him a position as Pastor. However, Joe Jeffers temporarily left after immediate criticism by members. Later he asked First Baptist if he could come back to Jonesboro and they refused. So he returned anyways and hosted a sermon near the Bible College. 171 members left First Baptist. According to Melinda Emerson, her friends were drawn to him because they “never heard the gospel spoke

That Time When a Florida Man Broke Into a Store While Wearing a Tutu

As average internet users probably know, some of the craziest crimes committed often happen in Florida. It’s become so common that there are even memes about the various cases that occur in the state.  This story in particular is in my opinion the funniest crime a Florida criminal has ever committed. It took place in a farmer’s market in Tampa Bay Florida, during it’s closing hours. Around 1 a.m., two men shattered the business office’s glass door. In the security footage you can see one of the men entering the store with only a tutu on, while the other wore an owl hoodie. The weird part is, their purpose was not to steal money like a typical store burglar would. All the men did while in the market was eat fruit and drink soda. Shortly after, they left the store. The man in the tutu was later identified as a 22 year old man named Jevon Ryner Jamison. He was then arrested and charged for criminal mischief, theft, and burglary. As for his accomplice, it was never publicly announce
